Huge cocaine seizure on a boat in Philadelphia could be largest ever

US federal authorities announced on Tuesday that it has seized about 16 tons of cocaine aboard a cargo ship in the port of Philadelphia, an operation described as one of the largest seizures in US history.

“It’s one of the largest drug seizures in US history,” said Philadelphia federal prosecutor William McSwain. “Such a quantity of cocaine could kill millions – millions – of people,” he tweeted.

Cocaine had a market value of more than $ 1 billion, according to the prosecutor’s office. Members of the ship’s crew have been arrested and charged, and an extensive investigation is under way.

The drug was found in seven containers on a freighter, MSC Gayane, moored in the Philadelphia harbor area on the Delaware River, according to several local media reports.

The ship was departing for Europe, having previously made stops in Chile, Panama and the Bahamas.

Images from local television showed vehicles from the Customs Protection Agency (CBP) parked on the wharves of South Philadelphia’s harbor, and four agents boarding the large container ship.
